Protection Monitors

Low Voltage
Medium Voltage
Marine Applications

As electric motors age, winding insulation begins to deteriorate allowing small amounts of current to leak to ground. Likewise, when allowed to cool or undergo periodic steam or water cleaning, motors will accumulate higher levels of winding moisture. This to results in higher levels of current to ground. Restarting such motors under any of these conditions can be disastrous.

The Solution.....

MotoSafe Insulation Deterioration Monitors offer an economical means of protecting critical AC and DC motors from the effects of age or moisture buildup. MotoSafe monitors induce a low voltage, low current on motor windings during the motors 'rest' cycle. The monitor continuously calculates circuit resistance to ground - should the resistance fall below predetermined levels, the monitor activates an integral contact that can either be used to alarm and draw attention to the problem... or can be tied into the starters logic prohibiting the motor from being started. (ie.........."logic prohibiting the motor from being started.")

MotoSafe / FailSafe Features:
  • Easy installation with complete kit
  • Small footprint, DIN Rail mounting
  • Gives early warning of insulation problems
  • Solid state circuitry
  • Low monitoring voltage for personnel safety
  • Integral self-test capability
  • LED local alarm
  • Contacts provided for local alarm and PLC connection
  • Local and remote reset capability

The MotoSafe Model 603IND Monitor can be installed in most MCCs due to its small footprint and convenient installation kit.

The Monitor functions with any line voltage up to 600 VAC and control voltages of either 120VAC or 220VAC - motor horsepower is not an issue.

The integral alarm or lock-out relay is rated for 5 A @ 250 VAC resistive.

The MHV insulation monitor series is intended for use with medium voltage motors up to 6.6kV. As in all MotoSafe systems, the control monitor is located in the equipment MCC; however, to maximize personnel safety, a low DC voltage is used to sense insulation resistance and is connected to the motor circuit through the neutral of a high resistance Intermediate Resistor Block mounted in the high voltage compartment.

MIL-STD

The FailSafe Model MGM600D Insulation Monitor are similar to the MotoSafe industrial models above except they are intended for ship board applications where Lloyds and MIL standards are required.

The range of insulation resistance (3 Megohms to 0.5 Megohms) was chosen to meet the needs of the marine environment which is more severe than most industrial environments.

The monitors provide the same alarm indication and contacts as the MotoSafe industrial monitors and are intended for both motors and generators up to 600 VAC or DC.
